Google Business Profile Protection

How Google Business Profile Protection watches your connected profile and auto-reverts hostile or unwanted edits to your real business details.

By RanksphereUpdated October 4, 2026

This guide explains how Google Business Profile Protection watches your connected profile for unwanted or malicious edits and reverts them to your real details automatically.

What is Google Business Profile Protection?

Anyone can suggest edits to a Google Business Profile, and Google also applies updates from its own sources. Most are harmless, but some are not: a competitor or a spammer can mark you closed, rewrite your hours, or swap your phone number, and the change can go live before you notice.

Profile Protection watches your connected profile for these "Google updates" and handles the harmful ones for you. Changes to your most important fields are reverted to your saved details right away. Softer edits are held so you can decide. Either way, you get an alert.

You'll find it on a location's header, as the Protect switch. It's available once the location's Google Business Profile is connected.

How Google Business Profile Protection works

  1. Turn Protect on. Your current, correct profile is saved as the baseline it restores to.
  2. Protection checks your profile for new Google updates.
  3. If a critical field changes, it's reverted to your baseline right away.
  4. Softer edits are held for your review instead of being applied behind your back.
  5. You get an alert for every change it reverts or holds, so you always know what happened.

Protection is fast detect-and-restore. It can't stop an edit from ever being applied, but it puts your details back as soon as a change lands, so a fake "closed" or a wrong phone number doesn't get to cost you customers.

What it protects

Reverted automatically

If any of these change, protection restores your saved value and alerts you:

  • Open / closed status
  • Business name
  • Address
  • Hours
  • Special hours
  • Phone number
  • Website
  • Categories

Held for your review

These are never changed without your say-so. You get an alert with a clear choice, Keep change or Restore mine:

  • Business description
  • Services
  • Service area

How to turn on Google Business Profile Protection

  1. Open a location that has its Google Business Profile connected.
  2. In the location header, flip the Protect switch on.
  3. Your current details are saved as the baseline.

Turn it off anytime. With protection off, Google and you manage edits the normal way. When you edit a protected field yourself in Ranksphere, that becomes the new baseline, so protection keeps your latest details, not an old version.

Common questions

Can competitors edit my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google lets anyone suggest edits to your profile, and Google also applies updates from its own sources. A competitor can suggest that you're closed or that your hours changed. With protection on, those changes to your critical fields are reverted for you.

How do I stop my business from being marked closed on Google?

Turn protection on for the location. If a change sets your open status to permanently or temporarily closed, protection restores it to open right away and sends you an alert.

Do I need my Google Business Profile connected?

Yes. Protection watches and restores a connected profile, so connect the location first.

Does it cost credits?

No. Turning it on and running it is free.

Can it stop Google from ever changing my profile?

There's no setting that blocks every edit. Protection is fast detect-and-restore: it puts your details back as soon as a change lands and alerts you, so a harmful edit doesn't stick.

What happens to the softer edits like my description?

They're held, not applied. You get an alert and decide: keep Google's version, or restore yours.

What if a change was actually correct?

For a held update, keep it in one tap. For a critical field you changed yourself in Ranksphere, that edit becomes the new baseline, so protection won't undo your own change.

Will I know when something was blocked?

Yes. Every reverted or held change shows up in your notifications, naming the field and what was restored.
